God’s Love
One of the most enjoyable parts of parenthood is teaching our children about God and His great love for each one of us.
We incorporate bible reading into our everyday life, using an age appropriate edition and keeping it very short. A quick story after breakfast each morning and a quiet read just before bed demonstrates that bible reading is very important to daily life. If this practice is a habit, then, as your child grows, it is then very easy to transition to personal daily devotions.
As soon as our children can talk we teach them bible verses – using made up actions to aid memory. We make it fun and give them lots of praise for their attempts.
Other story books and songs (standard or made up ones!) are constantly used to train our children in the positive virtues we want to see developing in their little hearts – cheerfulness, obedience, patience, politeness, honesty, sharing, kindness, goodness, tidiness, self-control and love. I find these training times to be the most positive and rewarding moments of my day.
We have children’s praise tapes in the car – it turns this ‘down’ time of traveling into a proactive training one. Videotapes are also brilliant teaching tools – children really take in what they see and hear. Do try out a video before you buy – what one family may adore, another is simply not interested in!
The teaching of positive virtues that point my child towards the nature and characteristics of God is a daily delight that greatly enhances the value of my work in the home. It is also a lot of fun. Nobody else has the privilege of introducing my child to God day in and day out. Wow! Make the most of these precious early years, and have fun!
Prov 119:109 Hide God’s word in your heart, so that you may not sin against Him.
